Cowbridge pupils reach new heights

Y Bont Faen pupils at Boulders
Pupils from Y Bont Faen Primary School recently enjoyed a morning of bouldering lessons.
The pupils developed their outdoor pursuit skills by visiting The Spot Climbing Centre in Pontypridd.
Pupils were taught the techniques for bouldering, which is a form of rock climbing that is performed without the use of ropes or harnesses.
Teachers from Y Bont Faen took pupils from years one to six throughout the week where they took part in star orienteering challenges to develop their teambuilding, fitness and communication skills.
Y Bont Faen’s PTA sponsor Herbert R Thomas (HRT) estate agents also attended and offered tips for the children taking part in the challenges.
In 2014, HRT became a main partner to Y Bont Faen’s PTA and has attended various events throughout the year, including sports days and Christmas fayres.
As a local agency with a long history in the town, HRT is a keen supporter of the local community and sponsoring Y Bont Faen’s PTA is one of the latest sponsorship deals for the Cowbridge-based estate agents.
Gavin Rees, partner at HRT, said: “The outdoor pursuit scheme at Y Bont Faen is a fantastic initiative to progress the pupils’ skills and it’s good to see a school take a different approach to developing pupils. Supporting community initiatives is something that is very important to us at HRT and we hope to continue to do this in the future. We enjoyed going along and watching the children take part in all of the activities.”
Jackie Jones, a teacher at Y Bont Faen, said: “The pupils all really enjoyed climbing, for many of them it was the first time they had ever tried it and they had a lot of fun. It was a fantastic way to reward the pupils towards the end of term and to develop essential skills. We would like to thank Spot Climbing centre for the lessons and HRT for coming along and showing their support.”
