Gavin Rees, Herbert R Thomas with Oldcastle Primary School pupils

Herbert R Thomas has been helping local pupils develop their digital skills. 

Staff from Herbert R Thomas' (HRT) Bridgend office recently held a photography workshop for eight year six pupils at Oldcastle Primary School.

Gavin Rees, partner at HRT, provided the pupils with a masterclass on how to take professional images with iPads and digital cameras.

In pairs, the pupils then had the opportunity to take photos around the school using the tips they had learnt. The photos will now be used in Oldcastle’s prospectus to encourage new students to enrol in September.

The scheme was part of Oldcastle School’s Digital Leader’s initiative, where teachers selected eight of the most technological-advanced students to help promote and develop ICT amongst students at the school.

With ICT becoming a more prominent part of the national curriculum, HRT has been eager to link up with Oldcastle Primary School to develop the children’s technical-literacy by teaching them practical work-based skills.

HRT has forged a strong relationship with Oldcastle after sponsoring the school’s PTA for this academic year as part of its Bridgend office launch last year. 

Mr Thompson, head teacher of Oldcastle Primary School, said: “We would like to thank HRT for a highly enjoyable and educational lesson. These children will now act as digital leaders for the school, helping to develop their communication skills as they relay what they’ve learned to their fellow pupils.

“We look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with HRT as we strive to improve the school for our pupils.”

HRT is a keen supporter of community initiatives. In 2014, members of HRT climbed Snowdon to help fund new books for Oldcastle Primary School.  The Cowbridge branch of HRT has also sponsored Y Bont Faen PTA and Cowbridge RFC, engaging in a variety of fundraising activities.

Oldcastle Primary School currently has over 400 pupils enrolled between the ages of 3 and 11.
