Cowbridge rugby players with Sam Warburton and Herbert R Thomas representatives

Budding rugby players from Cowbridge had the opportunity to meet their rugby idol, Sam Warburton, when he paid a special visit to meet the mini and junior teams from Cowbridge RFC.

The British and Irish Lions and Cardiff Blues back row delivered two questions and answer sessions to over 50 players, where they were able to pick up rugby tips and advice.

The event, which took place at the Bear Hotel in Cowbridge, was organised as part of the Cardiff Blues ‘Adopt a Player’ programme, which provides every rugby club within the Blues region with the opportunity to receive player visits directly to their club.

Philip Thomas, partner at Herbert R Thomas estate agents, which sponsors Cowbridge RFC, said: “A number of my nephews play for the junior team so I was delighted when the club informed us that Sam would be attending a question and answer session in Cowbridge. Sam is a true inspiration to all of the players as he clearly shows how hard work and determination will lead to success.

“At Herbert R Thomas, we have a strong link to rugby and Cowbridge RFC in particular, as many of our colleagues have relatives within the teams. All the players had a great evening, as did the parents who attended, and we’d like to thank Sam for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come down and talk to our team. We’d also like to thank the Bear Hotel for their hospitality.”

Sam Warburton said: “It was great to come down to Cowbridge to meet the mini and junior teams. I love Cowbridge. My agent and auntie and uncle live here so I’m often here.

“I really enjoy getting out into the community as part of the ‘Adopt a Player’ scheme and doing Q&As is always fun. It’s interesting to hear the questions the kids have and it’s always guaranteed to put a smile on my face.

“When I was in school, former Cardiff RFC player Ben Evans visited us and I remember being really inspired by him. I hope to have had a similar effect on these players.”
